Underground Skyscraper

Underground Skyscraper - "Earthscraper"My weekly StumbleUpon email presented me with this link to an article about an underground skyscraper concept from a Mexican architecture group. It has everything from museums and retail space to apartments and business offices (at the bottom because “that’s where business do their best work.”)

Umbrella Corporation reference, for the win!

There are some other great pictures of the design at the link above. Intriguing, to say the least.

Alien Rescue!

Megan and I did some LEGO stop action work yesterday. And when I say “work” I really mean “play.” It was a good project for the first day of summer.

The Greatest Show on Earth

circus01 This past Sunday, May 31st, Lori, Megan, and I went to the Ringling Brothers Barnum & Bailey circus. For Megan and me, it was the first time ever. Lori had been to one before, but it was so long ago (and so far gone from memory) that it didn’t really count, so for all practical purposes, it was the first circus for all of us.

It was Barnum’s “Funundrum” show and it was spectacular. At one point, I looked over at Megan and she was sitting there with her mouth hanging open in amazement. It was awesome.

One thing that was really surprising to me was that their clowns were not creepy… not even close. We’re talking less creepiness than even Ronald McDonald, and he pretty much sets the standard for non-creepy clowns.

There was so much going on all the time that it was tough to actually take pictures and watch at the same time. It was also hard to take pictures at all because nothing ever stops moving and the lighting is usually a bit low. I managed to do okay, though, and got some decent shots.

That said, here’s a link to my full album of shots.

Tassimo Coffee Maker, FTW!

Bosch Tassimo Coffee Maker

For an anniversary present, Lori got me this single-serving coffee maker by Tassimo (made by Bosch) that uses T-Disks to brew up a single cup of coffee.

The brewing process takes about a minute (if that) and, with the Gevalia disks that I have, fills up my travel mug perfectly with great coffee.

Since Lori usually likes her coffee a little weaker than I do (and sometimes likes flavored coffee, which I tend to find nasty for the most part), I rarely drink coffee at home, letting her have control of the main coffee pot and occasionally breaking out my percolator to make my own coffee.

But now she has effectively stopped my whining with this machine. There are dozens of coffee choices, as well as tea, hot chocolate, lattes, espressos, and cappuccinos available for it, so theoretically, I could have a different type of coffee every day of the week.

…at the touch of a button. w00t!

The Cuddle Recliner!

We just purchased some new furniture this past weekend and my favorite piece is now comfortably situated in front of the big TV just inviting me to come watch movies until… well… until I fall asleep, actually.

Here it is, swamping Megan in its giantness.

The Cuddle Recliner

It’s doubly awesome (no pun intended) because it will easily hold two people (hence the name), so now when Megan and I want to watch My Neighbor Totoro again, we don’t have to fight over who gets the comfy chair.

The only problem is reaching the remote on the side table.

Orca pack hunting

Jerry Coyne, of Why Evolution is True, linked to a video today of a pack of orcas hunting together and working cooperatively to get a seal off an ice floe. There’s more info at his article (and the info originally came from the book Here Be Dragons).

I imagine that seal is a bit freaked out.

Foxes playing on a trampoline

Lori showed me this video the other day of some foxes playing on a trampoline. One of them obviously likes the bounciness!

Bottlenose Dolphins Mud-ring Feeding

Dolphins amaze me.

Video description from Youtube:

A pod of bottlenose dolphins off the coast of Florida have developed a remarkable hunting strategy in order to catch fish. Another awesome thing about this technique is that only one female in the pod can create this ring.

Those are some clever animals.

Tim Minchin – Storm

I saw this months ago, but listened to it again and wanted to share it.

Tim Minchin performs his beat poem titled “Storm.” Don’t let “beat poem” put you off. This is such a wonderfully entertaining, funny, and insightful nine minutes that you won’t regret it!

Spooky Wave of Nostalgia!!!

I just saw a link from John Moltz that referenced this site. Like him, I had totally forgotten about owning this album! I had the orange version when I was around eight years old.

Front Cover Back Cover

Check out the site for larger versions. It even has scans of the record cover insert which had all kinds of party planning ideas. I remember making all the invitations, though I can’t remember if I actually had the party or not.

Good times. Good times.

New car in da house!

Okay, it’s not really in the house, but today Lori bought a new silver Scion xB to replace her aging Dodge Caravan. The dealer let her bring it home so I could check it out and we took it for a quick test drive around the neighborhood. It’s got a lot more pep than I expected and a ton of room inside. All her Pampered Chef gear fits perfectly in the back so it’s just what she needs for her shows… and it gets much better mileage.

scionxb

We’re taking it tonight when we go to dinner while my car waits forlornly in the driveway for my return.

(Anthropomorphism, for the win!)

Here’s a bit of pure awesome!

I saw this video linked by Felicia Day via Twitter. It’s a sand painter/animator on the Ukranian version of "America’s Got Talent" and she’s phenomenal.
